This is a variant of lumbar spinal stenosis where there is focal bony hypertrophy affecting the lateral part of the canal, causing compression that, instead of affecting the entire spinal canal, affects the nerve root either in the section located at its exit from the dural sac before leaving the spinal canal (recess stenosis) or in the immediately distal section (foraminal stenosis). It can be unilateral or bilateral. Its clinical manifestations are similar to those of a disc herniation. If symptoms persist, surgical treatment should be considered.
